Hwang Jea Sung (황제성)

Born 1957, South Korea

Hwang Jea Sung is a contemporary Korean artist whose works blur the boundaries between reality, memory, and imagination. Painted with meticulous realism yet imbued with dreamlike symbolism, his compositions unfold like scenes from an adult fairy tale, familiar yet quietly mysterious.

At the heart of Hwang’s practice is his exploration of the “circulation of life,” a concept rooted in Eastern philosophy and the idea of coexistence between multiple dimensions. Rather than focusing on the afterlife, his works contemplate the invisible worlds that may exist alongside our own, inviting viewers to reflect on time, memory, and human existence.

Recurring motifs such as Pinocchio, floating luggage, vintage automobiles, rivers, and winged horses act as symbolic bridges between childhood innocence and adult consciousness. Through these poetic narratives, Hwang creates contemplative spaces where nostalgia, longing, dream, and hope gently converge.
